Several months ago, the local photographers, James & Karla Murray, hosted two workshops titled, Capturing the Faces and Voices of the Lower East Side’s Disappearing Mom-and-Pop Storefronts. Coming up next week, an exhibition based on those sessions will open at the Theater for the New City.
The Murrays are the team behind the great book, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York (2008), and several other books. They have become passionate advocates of mom-and-pop businesses in New York City. The workshops showed participants how to use photography and oral history to, “raise public awareness, build community, and encourage advocacy.”
You’ll want to know that one of the businesses featured in the upcoming show is Cup & Saucer, the Lower East Side/Chinatown diner which closed last month after decades serving hungry customers.
The opening reception takes place Monday, Aug. 14, 6-9 p.m. at the Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue.
