It has been a year since the death of Al Orensanz, director of the Angel Orensanz Foundation. Coming up this Saturday at the Stanton Street Shul, there will be a remembrance (yahrzeit) of Orensanz, a longtime member of the Lower East Side community.

According to the Facebook invite, Yahrzeit will take place at noon, after morning services: “We will recall his wisdom, generosity and humor while sharing some food and drink.” The Stanton Street Shul is located at 180 Stanton St.

The Orensanz Center, located at 172 Norfolk St., is a beautiful public events space and cultural facility created by Spanish artist Angel Orensanz and Al, his brother in 1986. They restored the former Anshe Chesed Synagogue. In addition to overseeing the building and foundation, Al Orensanz was a sociologist and published author. He was 74.
