A lot of people apparently want to live in an apartment at Essex Crossing, the large mixed-use project now under construction in the former Seward Park Urban Renewal Area.

According to city officials, 93,361 applications have been received for 104 affordable apartments at 145 Clinton St., otherwise known as Site 5. The results of the lottery, which closed May 2, were first reported by DNAinfo, and confirmed by a spokesperson for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

The apartments are available in various income bands, ranging from $19,680-173,415/year. The largest number of units (59) are set aside for applicants earning about $60,000/year or less. Half of the apartments have been designated for residents of Community District 3, and there’s an additional set aside for former Seward Park site tenants.

The HPD spokesperson said all paper applications are being entered into the agency’s electronic lottery system. Applications are selected for review in random order. You can read more about the process here

A separate lottery for a senior affordable building located on Site 6 (175 Delancey St.) is open until June 16. The Essex Crossing project will eventually include 1,078 apartments, 561 (or 52%) of them affordable.

Given the incredible demand for affordable housing in New York City, housing lotteries always produce a lot of applications. Back in February, it was reported that 87,000 applications had been received for 104 affordable units for the first rental building in the Domino Sugar Factory project in Williamsburg.
