In the middle of the second season of Twin Peaks, after discovering a petroglyph (a rock carving or painting) inside a place known as The Owl Cave, Special Agent Dale Cooper tells Sherriff Harry S. Truman, “I have no idea where this will lead us. But I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.”
If any two words in the English language could possibly describe the work of the series co-creator David Lynch, and the places his imagination has taken us since Eraserhead was released in 1977, it’s “wonderful and strange.”
To celebrate the return of Twin Peaks — a third season will air 25 years after the supposed series finale this May — and the career of one of the most influential film directors of the last 30 years, SPOKE NYC, presents “In Dreams,” an art tribute show to David Lynch.
The show opens with a reception this Saturday, April 8th from 6-9pm, giving Lynchians everywhere a chance to see artwork dedicated to the man who gave us Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, and yes, Twin Peaks.
Over 80 artists from across the world are participating in this show, each one given free rein in how they wish to pay tribute to Lynch and his work. The pieces range from character portraits, like artist Caroline Caldwell’s portrait of John Merrick, the main character of The Elephant Man; screen-prints, like Matt Chase’s, minimalist custom Mulholland Drive movie poster; and sculptures like Vic DeLeon’s tribute to Blue Velvet.
There will be commemorative Twin Peaks postcards and stickers as well as free beer courtesy of The Bronx Brewery (no PBR or Heineken sadly). The first 100 people who enter the opening reception will be given a ticket to a midnight screening of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Lynch’s 1992 continuation of the series that was infamously booed at the Cannes Film Festival that year. The screening is a partnership between SPOKE NYC and the ROXY Cinema in Tribeca.
All original pieces and prints are available for sale on the day of the show.
The show runs through April 30th.
