Here’s a few of the events happening Jan. 31-Feb. 6 on the LES:
–On Sunday, the Better Chinatown Society sponsors the 18th annual Lunar New Year Parade. It kicks off at 1 p.m. on Mott Street, near Hester Street, but the starting line will be very congested. Your best bet is to find a good spot on East Broadway, Grand Street or by Sara D. Roosevelt Park. See the route and other details here.
–This evening (Tuesday), the Metrograph will be playing the cult classic, Grey Gardens, the 1975 documentary about the eccentric occupants of a decaying East Hampton estate. Jerry Torre, the handyman and artist who appeared in the film, will introduce the screenings. Tuesday, Jan. 31, 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m., $15, website for online reservations.
–On Wednesday evening, James Fuentes debuts the first solo exhibition at his gallery of artist Daniel Gordon. The exhibit, New Canvas, showcases Gordon’s method of melding traditional analogue techniques with digital imaging technologies. –There will be an opening this coming weekend for “The Box,” an exhibition at Con Artist Collective which explores, “what it means to be a female artist in today’s crazy world.” There will also be a raffle with proceeds benefiting Planned Parenthood. –Icelandic singer/songwriter Olof Arnalds plays Mercury Lounge over the weekend. The indie artist is just completing a new album. Saturday, Feb. 4, 7:30 p.m., $14, website.
–The New Museum’s ongoing series, First Saturdays for Families, is back this week with a special workshop dubbed, Talking Streets. Participants will, “create a collaborative landscape inspired by the surroundings of the New Museum.” Saturday, Feb. 4, 10 a.m.-noon, free, website.
–On Super Bowl Sunday, the Seward Park High School Alumni Association and the Big Apple Chapter of the American Political Items Collectors will be teaming up for a political memorabilia show and sale on the Lower East Side. There will be a wide selection of old political buttons and posters, and many other items. Sunday, Feb. 5, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., St. Mary’s Church, 440 Grand St., $3, TLD Calendar.
