Earlier this month, the Truman Democratic Club elected Jacob Goldman to serve as male district leader in the 65th Assembly District, Part A. He fills a vacancy that was created by the death this past fall of longtime district leader David Weinberger.

In the volunteer position, he’ll be joining Karen Blatt, co-district leader on the Lower East Side. The job entails helping to run local elections and serving as a conduit between members of the community and elected officials.

The Truman Club put out a press release about Goldman’s election. It noted that a celebration was attended by Yuh-Line Niou, who is succeeding Sheldon Silver as assembly member in the 65th assembly district; Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer; and City Council member Margaret Chin.

In a statement, Goldman said, “I had known and have been a close friend of David Weinberger for more than 20 years, having worked with him at the United Jewish Council, and it is a very humbling honor to take his role… As everyone says, I have very big shoes to fill, but I am here to represent our neighborhood.”

Goldman owns LoHo Realty and has lived in the Grand Street cooperatives for more than 20 years. He was formerly president of the Bialystoker Synagogue and a member of the local school board.

District leaders serve one year terms. The Truman Club is one of four Democratic political organizations in the 65th AD. The club backed Alice Cancel for Silver’s former assembly seat. While she was victorious in a special election last spring, Cancel was defeated in September’s Democratic primary. The Truman Club, closely associated with Silver, is trying to remain relevant as a new political era begins in Lower Manhattan.
