Family and friends gathered at the Bialystoker Synagogue this morning to remember David Weinberger, a well-known member of Grand Street’s Jewish community.
Weinberger , 74, died on Tuesday, just hours before the start of the Yom Kippur holiday. The longtime community activist was a district leader on the Lower East Side, one of the founders of the Hatzolah volunteer ambulance service and a former community liaison for the United Jewish Council of the East Side. He was also a leader in the Harry S. Truman Democratic Club, former Assemblyman Sheldon Silver’s political organization.
At today’s funeral service, Rabbi Yeshaya Siff of the Young Israel Synagogue called Weinberger a dedicated public servant who loved his family and was devoted to helping the Lower East Side community. Silver was in attendance this morning, as was State Sen. Daniel Squadron. Weinberger’s wife, Hedy, works in Squadron’s office.
The Weeinberger family will be sitting shiva in their Grand Street apartment.
