Must Read

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is in the midst of a major expansion. Several weeks ago, work began on the upper floors of 103 Orchard St., which are being transformed into a new exhibition space. Upon opening on July 4, 2017, the museum will be telling the stories of three immigrant groups: Holocaust survivors, Puerto Ricans and Chinese. This morning in front of the building, local dignitaries gathered for a brief “groundbreaking”/photo op. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, State Sen. Daniel Squadron, City Council member Margaret Chin and Tom Finkelpearl, commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, were all on hand. We’ll have a full report on the museum’s expansion in the next several days.
