Construction on the Essex Crossing development sites will force the closure of Norfolk Street tomorrow evening.

You might have seen the signs. Both the street and sidewalk between Grand and Delancey streets will be shut down from 8 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday 5 a.m. The same goes for the roadway and sidewalk on Broome Street between Essex and Suffolk streets. Identical road closures will be in effect from Friday, August 12 at 9 p.m. through Monday, August 15 in the early morning hours. Traffic enforcement agents will be on the scene to help manage the situation.

Over this coming weekend, construction crews will be installing a tower crane on site 2 of Essex Crossing, which is located on the southeast corner of Essex and Delancey streets. The building going up on this parcel is a 24-story apartment complex with a 14-screen regal movie theater and an expanded home for the Essex Street Market.

The overall project on the former Seward Park urban renewal site will create 1,000 apartments and 600,000 square feet of commercial space. You can follow construction updates here.

UPDATE: The weekend closure has been delayed. It’s now scheduled August 19-21 (Friday-Sunday).
