Annual Loisaida Festival Returns This Sunday
The annual Loisaida Festival returns on Sunday, May 29, for its 29th year of celebrating Puerto Rican and Latino culture and heritage throughout the neighborhood. This year’s festival promises to pay homage to the organization’s original Puerto Rican roots.
The main stage lineup brings together a mix of well known and rising Puerto Rican stars including hip-hop singer DayLuv, songstress Maxine Ashley, Lower East Salsa, and Johnny Colón. Macha Colón y Los Okapi will be joining the stage courtesy of La Marqueta Retoña. The carnival procession and Theater Lab are returning, providing entertainment for children and their families. Puerto Rican icon and international entertainment phenomenon, Iris Chacon, will host the festivities alongside Marine-combat-vet-turned actor, singer/activist J.W. Cortes.
The 3rd Annual Loisaida Festival Theater Lab will run in conjunction with the festival, providing a wide variety of performances ranging from well-established veteran companies, up-and-coming theater troupes to local youth productions in the family-friendly La Plaza Cultural Community Garden (9th Street at Ave. C).
This year’s Loisaida team offers expanded programming that also includes an exhibition by Marvel’s Edgardo Miranda Rodriguez titled “Guardians of Loisaida,” a Grassroots Innovation Fair, an expanded Healthy Living Zone, with free dental screenings for children, and a new Sustainable Innovation Zone, which will include a Bio Bus.
Additionally, this year’s festivities will start a day early, with the “El Loop Fair – A Latino Grassroots Innovation Fair,” to be held on Saturday May 28th, from 1 to 6pm at the Loisaida Center (710 East 9th St.).
