There was some excitement on Essex Street this afternoon and evening. A crane tipped into a condo building, 133 Essex St., the “man lift” crashing into a window on the second floor. Fire and police officials said no one was injured.
At around 7 p.m., emergency crews finally dislodged the crane and lowered it to safety. Essex Street had been shut down above Rivington Street. The Department of Buildings ordered an inspection to make sure there are no stability issues.
UPDATE 4/26: A stop worker order has now been issued and the property owner was handed a violation for failing to maintain a safe work site. At the time of the accident, a crew was working on the building facade. The crane tipped over and experienced hydraulic failure. A resident was inside the apartment, but was uninjured.
