Last fall, we first brought you news about Henry Street Settlement’s project to establish a Neighborhood Resource Center within an historic former fire house at 269 Henry St.
Last month, the City Council approved the land use application, transferring the 1884 building to the social service organization. The vote was reported by City Land yesterday. The four-story structure was once home to Engine Company 15, which is now located on Pitt Street. The old structure wasn’t suitable for parking the new fire engines that were ordered following 9/11. At one point, the city contemplated selling the property to a private developer.
Now a $5.5 million renovation project will transform the fire house into a center for food stamp enrollment, legal services, parenting, child care and a community events. The restoration project is being handled by architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle. It’s meant to emphasize street access and to create a kind-of “front door” for the Henry Street Settlement.
