Several buildings have been evacuated following a water main break on Cherry Street near Rutgers Slip. The water main is located alongside Extell Development’s massive construction project on the former Pathmark grocery store site. Firefighters cleared the immediate area at around 5 p.m. as a safety precaution. The city’s Department of Environmental Protection shut down the 12-inch water line and are in the process of assessing how many customers are impacted. In the past several months, the street has been cratering. Contractors have repaired the damage, but residents have been concerned about the stability of the roadway and the walkway alongside the work site. We have calls into Extell reps as well as Con Ed for more details.
