The NYC Department of Health has closed Prosperity Dumpling in Chinatown. Gothamist yesterday published a photo that appeared to show food prep taking place in the back alley of the restaurant at 46 Eldridge St.
A health department spokesperson told the blog that the photo was being treated as a complaint, prompting an investigation. The closure was ordered later in the day. The owners’ daughter said the popular dumpling spot would reopen. “We care about all of our customers,” she told Gothamist. “We always try to make the best dumplings and the freshest dumplings for everyone, but anyway, we made a mistake and we’re trying to fix it. We will keep the inside of the store clean and the outside clean.”
As of this morning, the health department had not updated it’s online information regarding Prosperity Dumpling. The restaurant had received an “A” during a May 28 inspection. In an ungraded inspection earlier that month, however, the restaurant racked up 40 violation points. The report indicated the location was not “vermin proof.” The Gothamist tipster noted the presence of rats in the alley.
Rat fried rice indeed. Dumpling meat is not pork. Beware of these places.
