The time has come. Crews today are beginning preliminary demolition work at 400-402 Grand St., the twin tenements on site 5 of the Essex Crossing development project.
Scaffolding is going up on the smaller building, while workers dismantle the fire escapes on the five-story western-most structure that was occupied by residential tenants until several months ago. Essex Crossing will, as you probably know by now, create 1,000 units of housing as well as more than 600,000 of commercial space in the former Seward Park urban renewal area.

Hi Lo-Down – were you able to find out what’s going to happen to all those nice stone lintels? The ones on 402 are particularly nice. Is there a salvage yard for that kind of thing, or do they end up in a landfill?
