Kansas, one of Tribeca’s better known galleries, is joining the stampede to the Lower East Side. As the Observer first reported, the Franklin Street gallery has leased a new space at 210 Rivington St. (Pitt Street).
A September opening is anticipated. “We find ourselves needing more flexible exhibition space along with a better location to make it all more visible, and 210 Rivington definitely offers both,” dealer Steven Stewart told the Observer. “My plan is to step up the programming with bigger group exhibitions and events as well as to add some new talent to the roster.”
More galleries are looking at locations east of Clinton Street these days. Kansas joins Bodega (167 Rivington St.), Cindy Rucker (141 Attorney St.) and Lynch Tham (175 Rivington St.)
210 Rivington St. is a somewhat notorious address. Until this past spring, the building was owned by controversial Lower East Side property owner Samy Mahfar. He sold the building for $12.5 million to Ariel Soudry, another landlord with a talent for attracting negative news coverage.
