A fire erupted in a manhole on Norfolk Street, just outside Schiller’s Liquor Bar, this afternoon, knocking out power to most of the block, between Delancey and Rivington streets.

Business owners on the block tell us it started at around 1 p.m. Firefighters responded quickly but the damage to electrical cables was significant. Con Ed is now on the scene. Crews are estimating repairs will take at least several hours.

Among those businesses and organizations impacted are: Comprehensive Kids School, Asian Americans for Equality, Schiller’s and the Mexican restaurant La Contenta. Other nighttime only businesses, such as the Back Room and Nurse Bettie, could be affected if the repairs take longer than currently expected. Tiny’s Giant, the coffee and sandwich shop, did not lose power and remains open.

Here’s a video from earlier shot by Alex Valencia of La Contenta.
