You may have noticed new fencing around 400-402 Grand St., the tenements that will soon be demolished for the Essex Crossing development project. On Clinton Street, a walkway on the west side of the street has been eliminated. On Grand, the plywood has been moved closer to the street. In a newsletter today from Delancey Street Associates, the development consortium, there are a few new tidbits about the demo project and other aspects of the 1.9 million sq. ft. residential and commercial complex.

Workers are getting started this week and will be on the job Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The developers think the job on Essex Crossing site 5 will take about four weeks. According to the newsletter, “the project will include a grocery store, a gym an other ground floor retail uses,” in addition to about 200 apartments. It’s the first time they’ve publicly mentioned a gym as part of the facilities.

On site 2, at Essex and Delancey streets, new fencing is being put up in preparation for full-scale construction. The residential building that will also include a 14-screen movie theater and a new Essex Street Market, is expected to be completed in about 36 months.

Finally, the developers, the Lower East Side Employment Network and the InterContinental Hotel Group are hosting a job training expo July 30 at Grand Street Settlement. The event is meant for “residents interested in training and employment opportunities for building maintenance, construction, healthcare, hospitality/hotels, retail, and other industries.”

It will be held at 4 p.m. at 80 Pitt St.
