The first annual Greek Jewish Festival was a big success on Broome Street this past weekend. The event, put on by the Kehila Kedosha Janina synagogue, included traditional music and food, arts and crafts and tours of the landmarked synagogue building. Local journalist Marjorie Ingall filed an interesting piece for Tablet on the story of this little shul, the only Romaniote synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Today we’re highlighting another project the congregation has been working on in recent months.
According to Andrew Marcus, Kehila Kedosha Janina has sponsored four murals on roll-down gates stretching from Allen Street to Eldridge on Broome Street. It’s a beautification project coordinated by the Woodward Gallery, located a short distance from the synagogue. Well-known street artists, such as Baby 168, Moody and DR have participated.
