Lower East Side History Month gets underway tomorrow with a huge variety of cultural events from many different neighborhood organizations. We’ll be highlighting many of them in the next 30 days.
On Sunday, there’s an opening reception for “East Village: Lens on the Lower East Side” at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center. The exhibition, sponsored by the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative, showcases a fascinating collection of contemporary photographs from photographers with “artistic roots” in the East Village. Featured artists include: Onno de Jong, Don Freeman, Alan Gastelum, George Hirose, Marlis Momber and Ciaran Tully.
The show is, in part, a celebration of the New York Landmarks Law, which just turned 50. Organizers say it’s meant “to remind people of our neighborhood’s beauty, wonder, and individuality, and to call out for the preservation of its invaluable, irreplaceable legacy, for our own and future generations.”
The opening takes place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Clemente, 107 Suffolk St.
