SPaCE Block Association Opposes Liquor Permit at 17 Essex St.

The SPaCE Block Association has decided to oppose the liquor license application for a small garden level space at 17 Essex St. The operator, using the trade name “Vote for Pedro,” will go before Community Board 3’s liquor licensing committee tonight.

According to the community board questionnaire, the Mexican restaurant would include a 10-seat bar and five tables. Proposed operating hours are noon-4 a.m. There are 12 full liquor licenses within 500 feet of the location.

We’re told by SPaCE leader Emma Culbert that the group met with the applicant to hear more about his plans. They decided to oppose his proposal because the area is becoming over-saturated with bars and restaurants. “Another bar will be a further nail in the coffin of quality of life on Essex Street and most specifically for the residents in those handful of buildings (in the immediate vicinity),” Culbert said.

Two establishments, Beverly’s and Clockwork, are located at 21 Essex St., just a few feet from the proposed restaurant. Another bar, Old Man Hustle, is at 39 Essex St.

The CB3 panel meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the community board office, 59 East 4th St.
