Police are on the hunt for a burglar who broke in through the ceiling of the Stop 1 Deli at 265 Cherry St. (Rutgers) last week and stole $25,000.
The owner closed the business at around 10:40 last Tuesday evening, locked the doors and pulled down metal security gates. When he returned shortly after 5 the next morning, 7th Precinct cops say, he found that three cash registers had been opened and an office in the back of the store had also been forced open. The burglar apparently made a hole in the ceiling after gaining access from an adjacent emergency generator room.
Video surveillance is available but it has not yet been released by police. The suspect was wearing gloves and a mask.
The store is located within the Lands End II housing complex, which recently changed ownership.
