The Lower East Side branch of a Williamsburg favorite, Pies & Thighs, opened for business this morning at 43 Canal St. The holiday probably had something to do with it, but the new spot was attracting a healthy share of hungry customers shortly after unlocking the front door at 9 a.m.
The space features a nine-stool bar, several two-seat booths and limited seating for larger groups in the back. This morning freshly-baked pies and doughnuts were displayed on a shelf alongside the front window. The restaurant will be open for breakfast and lunch every day, closing for one-hour before dinner service begins at 5 p.m.
You can go all-out (as I did) and order the fried chicken and waffles. But there are lots of other options, including: eggs with a biscuit and grits, fried chicken and fried catfish sandwiches, Carolina pulled pork, burgers and salads. The place is set up to accommodate people who want to grab coffee and a doughnut on their way to work.
Back in the spring, we spoke with co-owner Sarah Sanneh about the new venture. A former resident of Division Street who now lives in the Hillman Co-op on Grand Street, Sannah knows the territory. It’s the first expansion of Thighs & Pies, a Brooklyn mainstay for nine years.
