Friday afternoon food notes:
- Two weeks and counting until wd-50 closes for good on Clinton Street. Tributes to chef Wylie Dufresne are coming fast and furious. David Chang posted this photo on twitter yesterday along with the message, “Momofuku wouldn’t exist without this man. Everyone in the Lower East Side owes him royalties.” On Grub Street, noteworthy chefs reminisce about their favorite Dufresne dishes.
- Businessweek notes that reservations for the final meals at wd-50 are some of the hottest tickets in town. But Dufresne says no one has rushed in with an offer to bankroll a new version of the restaurant; “I don’t necessarily want to close the door,” he explains, “but, as of yet, no hotelier has called to say he absolutely must have a wd-50 in his lobby.”
- If you’re living large, Sauce will be offering up a white truffle festival beginning next Tuesday. Chef/owner Frank Prisinzano went to Italy to forage for them himself. On his Instagram feed, Prisinzano reported, the “truffles are sick and wickedly twisted this year… Most locals and hunters are saying they are the most twisted and gnarly anyone can remember and the aroma in my opinion is not as good as last year.” Reservations are being accepted at: truffles@saucerestaurant.com.
- In preparation for its first national media campaign, Page Six hears Streit’s Matzo has hired former “Real Housewives” star Jill Zarin to be its spokesperson.
