A very impressive press kit arrived on our doorstep in the form of an old fashioned doctor’s bag filled with all sorts of gory goodies, including a preview of Cinemax’s new series, “The Knick.” The medical drama, created by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (“Raising Helen,” “Big Miracle”), revolves around the surgical team at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century. It doesn’t pull any punches in showing us just how gruesome things could be inside what was a progressive institution for its day. The reviews have been mixed. Here’s a nice overview from Time.

The production team created an elaborate, old timey version of Orchard Street as part of their set last November.  The entire first season is directed by Stephen Soderbergh and stars Clive Owen as an arrogant yet brilliant surgeon with a secret cocaine and opium addiction. It debuts Friday evening.
