The New Museum will be hosting its annual block party in Sara D. Roosevelt Park this coming Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  This free event offers an opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore the history and current exhibitions of the museum in a more interactive setting. Through a variety of workshops, guests will be able to learn more about the museum’s early days and the impact that it has had on the Lower East Side up to recent years.

Among these workshops is the Bowery Artist Tribute, in which participants will be able to create artworks inspired by Bowery artists such as Mary Heilmann and Martin Wong.  A similar program, entitled Art on the Facade, leaves guests with a little party favor — a take home  pocket-sized version of artworks displayed through the museum’s Facade Sculpture Program.

Throughout the afternoon Saturday, block party guests will also receive free admission to the museum, where they’ll be able to experience free tours of the latest exhibition, “Here and Elsewhere“, which will be on public display beginning tomorrow.  The exhibition brings together multi-medium works from over 45 artists from 15 countries, who have come together to share their experiences as artists in the face of war, modernization, and globalization.  Public tours of “Here and Elsewhere” will be offered every half hour from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (We’ll have a full report on the exhibition tomorrow.)

A series of afternoon musical performances will be offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring artists who blend diverse musical traditions in new ways. For example, M. Lamar, who will be on stage at 3 p.m, is known for combining operatic vocals with piano accompaniment, adding sounds inspired by Negro spiritual traditions, finally paired with clashing black metal.
