Canal Street Newcomer Cochinita Dos Cleared to Serve Liquor

The State Liquor Authority has approved a full bar permit for the new Mexican restaurant over the objections of Community Board 3.

On Tuesday, proprietor Adam Frank won his battle to serve alcohol, just two weeks after opening in the former Overseas Taste spot.

Tequila destined for margaritas was already on its way Thursday afternoon, Frank said. Community Board 3 denied his application back in March, noting that Frank’s original Brooklyn restaurant, called Cochinita, operates with only a beer and wine license. Community board members make recommendations, but the state licensing agency has final authority on permits.

For now, Frank plans to offer frozen margaritas and bottled beer, including Negro Modelo, Pacifico and other selections from Mexican brewers. A draft beer system is in the long-range plan, he said.

Cochinita Dos serves a small menu of tacos, burritos and plates made with all-natural meats ranging from $4.50 to $10.  Housemade beverages like limeade, horchata and iced hibiscus flower tea round out the non-alcoholic beverage menu, and desserts include flan and dark chocolate pudding. Dine-in is at communal tables; delivery is available east of Bowery and south of Houston Street.
