The other day we reported that Extell Development had filed preliminary documents with the Department of Buildings for a 68-story tower at the former Pathmark site on Cherry Street. The enormous building will dwarf any other structure in the immediate area and add hundreds of market-rate apartment to the Lower East Side’s residential inventory.
Today workers were on the site beginning to demolish the single-story Pathmark building, which was shuttered at the end of 2012. The windows have been knocked out on the Cherry Street side of the building.
Along South Street, scaffolding and netting are visible. The photos below were taken yesterday:
Signage indicates the project will be completed in 2019.
