Here was the scene a few minutes ago on Essex Street — city workers cleaning up around and inside the dilapidated Schiff Fountain alongside Seward Park. It’s probably not a coincidence that Mayor de Blasio is coming to the park at 12:45 this afternoon to announce his new Parks commissioner. Mitchell Silver, the head of planning for Raleigh, North Carolina, has been tapped for the job.
Seward Park is home to the oldest municipal playground in the country. The fountain has been in a state of disrepair for many years; many parts are missing, and officials have estimated it would cost at least a million dollars to restore the fountain to its former glory. Maybe the mayor is bringing his checkbook?
Local neighborhood groups are encouraging residents to come out today for the announcement.
