Congratulations this morning to director/writer Spike Jonze, a Lower East Side resident, for his big win at the Academy Awards. Last night, he took home the Oscar for best original screenplay. Jonze was the creative force behind “Her,” the film about a man (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his operating system. During his acceptance speech, Jonze thanked everyone who helped make the film and said, “we made a movie about relationships and intimacy, and that’s what we share together.”
Jonze has lived in The Forward Building on East Broadway for the past 8 years (when he’s not in LA). He’s best known for directing films such as Being John Malkovich and Where the Wild Things Are and videos for the Beastie Boys, Bjork and many other musicians. This is Jonze’s first Oscar.
