Follow-up: Pies ‘n’ Thighs Owner Details Plan for LES Expansion
We have an update this morning to yesterday’s story about Williamsburg’s Pies ‘n’ Thighs coming to the LES.
Sarah Sanneh, one of the owners of the popular fried chicken and dessert joint, shared her plans for her new space at 43 Canal St. in a phone interview this morning.
“We’ll have all the classics we have at the Brooklyn location, with a few special dishes,” she said. “The space is really small, so the set-up will be more like a lunch counter, similar to B & H and Eisenberg’s.”
Sanneh, who moved to the Hillman Houses on Grand Street last fall, spent five years in an apartment on Division Street, so she knows that part of the neighborhood well.
“We looked off and on for about a year, and saw a few great spaces, but this was the one that just really jumped out as the right fit,” Sanneh said. “This block is so beautiful.”
The LES version of Pies ‘n’ Thighs, the first expansion for the 8-year-old restaurant, is scheduled for a late-summer opening, Sanneh said. It will have about 35 seats. Like the original across the river, it will serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch, as well as offer takeout and delivery. A beer and wine license is on the fast track for approval, since the proprietors have agreed to close at midnight daily. Renovations have not yet started at the space, which most recently was a photo/copy shop but has been vacant for some time. All the cooking and baking will be done in-house at the new location, she said.
Pies ‘n’ Thighs is just one of several new eateries planned for the area where Canal, Division and Ludlow streets intersect: a wood-fired pizza joint and artisan cocktail bar are under way at 1 Ludlow, and Clinton Hill taco spot Cochinita is angling for the former Overseas Taste space at 49 Ludlow St.
