Downtown Art Seeks Young Actors for Upcoming Show

Must Read

Downtown ArtOur friends at Downtown Art, a company that works with teens in the community to create vibrant, interactive performances, is holding auditions for their upcoming show. They write:

Downtown Art is auditioning actors ages 13-26 for our production of THE NEWS, an outdoor music-theater work that will perform Saturdays in May. A full schedule of rehearsals is below.

THE NEWS combines live acting/movement with recordings of ten original songs, all based on newspaper articles about events that took place in the Lower East Side one hundred years ago. The events range from a baby contest to a tenement fire, from a huge outdoor children’s pageant to the “invasion” of a church by a group of hungry, unemployed men. All together they show the character of the LES, a bustling immigrant neighborhood.

Actors will work with the director to create stagings of the songs, and ‘lip synch’ to the recorded vocals. At the performances, audiences and actors will hear the score through synced mp3 players; the audience will be led to various neighborhood sites where the actors will act out the scenes of each song. Actors will help create original movement and dance based on everyday gestures as part of the staging.

Auditions begin this Saturday, March 1 at 3:30pm. The audition lasts an hour and actors will get to work on short scenes together. No advance prep is needed.

Please email… ryan@downtownart.org if you’d like to audition. You must have reserved a spot to audition.
