Here’s more now on the water main break at East Broadway and Clinton streets.   You’re looking at photos taken by employees of the Seward Park Co-op, who were present early this morning when a Department of Sanitation snow plow apparently dislodged a metal plate on the west side of Clinton Street, causing the rupture.

According to Seward Park General Manager Frank Durant, both water and gas lines sit below the street at this location, but only water was impacted.  As noted earlier, we asked a spokesperson with the Department of Environmental Protection (the agency repairing the line) about the cause of the rupture.  She said an investigation is ongoing and no information was available concerning any role a city plow operator might have played.

Durant said water service has been disrupted to all of the businesses in a commercial strip on Clinton (from East Broadway to Grand) and in the stores located on Grand Street (between Clinton and Suffolk streets). Among those impacted: the Fine Fare Supermarket, 7-Eleven, a Chinese takeout restaurant and Tribeca Pediatrics.

No residential service has been affected.  The co-op normally accesses water mains on both East Broadway and Grand streets.  At the moment, it’s relying only on the Grand Street line.
