At recent community meetings, some residents have been calling for more red light cameras at busy intersections on the Lower East Side. The request has made its way to State Senator Daniel Squadron, who is working through Community Board 3 to gather suggestions for new locations.
This past year, the State Legislature gave New York City permission to pilot a red light camera program; there are 20 mobile cameras positioned near schools. The city does not disclose the locations. Across the country, the idea is controversial. The remote cameras are seen as an invasion of privacy by some; others have criticized similar programs as unfair revenue boosting schemes for cash-strapped cities.
At any rate, New York City transportation officials say the evidence is clear: red light cameras reduce the number of accidents and make intersections closer. The Legislature will be required to raise the 20-camera cap if there’s going to be an expansion of the program. Senator Squadron has been advocating for an increase.
