Private outdoor space is tough to come by on the Lower East Side, but so far no one seems to be snatching up a $49,000 rooftop cabana at 154 Attorney St.
This outdoor oasis has been listed on Streeteasy for 52 days, although the price was reduced from $79,000 back in June. The Douglas Elliman listing boasts, “Great to have your own barbeque for those nights when you crave a grilled hot dog, burger or fish. sunbathe eat drink and relax on your own piece of roof Real Estate!” There is a major catch: you’ve got to own an apartment in the building to be eligible to purchase this space. Right now, apartment #203 is available; it’s a 2-bedroom, 843 square foot unit for $939,000.
Back in 2007, the “cabanas” at 154 Attorney got a bit of media attention; one guy said he’d paid $50,000 for one. The Real Deal reported: “The builders have devised a way to offer buyers valuable private outdoor space beyond the terraces many of the units contain. Six private cabanas with running water and a little bit of view are for sale on the roof for residents who want to stretch out on lawn chairs and cook on the grill under the open sky.”
One more catch: the space comes with a monthly maintenance fee ($122) and $52 per month in taxes.
What a joke. outrageous pricing for that neighborhood. Did they mention the building is surrounded by tenements? The fools that pay these rediculous amounts for an apartment should have their heads examined. Way to go the new elitist….
