Arts Watch: Summer in Seward Park Pop-Up Events Kick Off
There’s a new free outdoor Pop Up Festival opening this week in the LES thanks to the Educational Alliance.
Summer in Seward Park is part of a series of kick-off festivities for the Manny Cantor Center, the Alliance’s new state-of-the-art community center scheduled to open in December. Its 125-year-old building on East Broadway is getting a much-needed face lift inside and out.
To showcase the future offerings of the Manny Cantor Center, Summer in Seward Park is hosting a series of pop-up events for kids of all ages, adults and the whole family, through Aug. 2. Morning “Kid Acts” include storytelling for tots, courtesy of the Seward Park librarians, family fitness classes by PopFit Kids and performances by an eclectic group of kid friendly clowns, puppets and singers, including Oran Etkin and Timbalooloo. On Tuesday nights, it’s adult time. Get ready for a relaxing workout with Pop Up Yoga NYC‘s open-level Vinyasa style yoga classes. Just bring a smile (and your own mat).
Everyone can get into the act Wednesday nights during the “Neighborhood Music Concerts and Jams.” Some of the best local musicians will perform an eclectic mix of music, from blues and jazz, to traditional Chinese and Latin sounds, and all are encouraged to jump in. Bring your own horn, drum, ukulele, rattle or whatever instrument you can carry into the park, and join in the music-making during the grand music-jam finale. This Wednesday, July 10, Clinton Street resident and guitarist Dave Fields brings his friends to the park for an hour of electrifying blues and soul, Lower East Side style. I can’t think of a better way to keep cool in the hood.
