Chinatown, a hot spot for New York’s Asian community, is going to get hotter this weekend as a big 3-on-3-basketball tournament comes to Columbus Park and parts of Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
The tourney, in its 19th year, is hosted by Asian Hoops and presented by Manhattan Bridge Orthodontics. This tournament features youth nine and older as well as those over sixty, playing in over twenty divisions. Though for all ages, there is heavy competition as many church sponsored basketball teams, who play one another throughout the year, participate.
This 3-on-3 tournament, which started with just 75 teams in 1995, has grown to almost 300 teams and thousands of spectators. The event operates under some of the rules and regulations of the North American Chinese Basketball Association. The level of skill and height of players are also taken into consideration to ensure fair play. There is a team fee of $80-$95, depending on the division. Each participant receives a commemorative t-shirt.
