On the evening of September 25 of last year, Lower East Side resident Jonathan Lopez was involved in an accident at the intersection of Grand and Allen streets.  Eight months later, his family is still trying to piece together the horrible events that unfolded around 10:30 p.m., and they could use your help.  Lopez, 26 at the time, was apparently riding his bike westbound on Grand when he was struck by a van operated by Premier Paratransit that was traveling northbound on Allen. He suffered a severe brain injury, is unable to walk and cannot communicate.

The photos you see here were taken by police officers from the 7th Precinct.  According to Roger Simon, an attorney hired by the Lopez family, the NYPD is just wrapping up its investigation.  It has been hampered by the lack of witnesses. There is a traffic camera mounted on the southwest corner of the intersection, but it’s unclear whether video from this night was saved.  In the past, police have not been able to retrieve footage because cameras like this one, controlled by the Department of Transportation, don’t have a record function; they’re designed to spot traffic problems in real time.

Because Lopez “lacks mental capacity,” the family is in the process of appointing his mother as legal guardian.  Once that occurs and more facts are known about the accident, a lawsuit will very likely be filed.  Lopez lived at 410 Grand St, which is the Seward Park Extension Public housing complex.  If you have any information about the events at this location last fall, you can email us at: tips@thelodownny.com.
