This coming weekend, Jenifer Rajkumar will announce she’s running against District 1 City Council member Margaret Chin in the upcoming Democratic Primary.  A Facebook invite popped up earlier today, promoting a Sunday afternoon kickoff on the steps of City Hall.

Rajkumar has been contemplating a run against the first-term Council representative for several months.  Although there was hardly any doubt she would get in the race, Rajkumar delayed an official announcement.  We covered back-to-back appearances by the two candidates before CoDA, a downtown political club the weekend before last.

Rajkumar, a district leader, believes Chin has not done enough to advocate for constituents upset about the NYU expansion plan, the creation of a Soho BID and other issues.  The campaign event takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday.  District 1 covers almost all of Lower Manhattan below East Houston Street, including the Lower East Side.
