New Restaurant/Bar Planned on Bowery at Broome Street

Must Read

Renovations have begun to turn a former lighting store at 146 Bowery into a restaurant and bar.

The Bowery’s parade of outgoing lighting stores and incoming nightlife venues continues, with the newest entrant making plans for a new restaurant and bar at the corner of Broome Street, on the ground floor of the Sohotel.

A firm calling itself Bowery Restaurant Group LLC is seeking a full bar license at 146 Bowery, which is also known as 341 Broome St. It’s the former home of the 40-year-old Bowery Interiors/Lite Elite store, which closed last year after a drawn-out “going out of business” sale.

The liquor license was scheduled for a hearing before Community Board 2’s SLA committee on Oct. 9, but was postponed, according to CB2 District Manager Bob Gormley, who declined to provide any additional details on the application or the people behind it. (Unlike Community Board 3, Community Board 2 does not post pending applications on its website for public review.)

Department of Buildings records show a total occupancy of 116 people in the 10,000-square-foot space. Permits for interior renovations were issued beginning in December 2011, with the architect listed as Paul Golden of South Orange, N.J., and the property owner listed as David Cohen of Bowery Realty Corp. Neither Golden nor Cohen responded to our inquiries about the project.

Stay tuned as details emerge.

  1. It’s actually an event space, and the new kitchen along Broome, according to a guy at the site, is for food prep for same (a “pop-up kitchen”).
