On Sunday, the LES Jewish Conservancy presents its second annual Heritage Festival. The day’s events include the opening (1:30 p.m.) of Paul Weissman’s photo exhibition, “Before the Change,” an exploration of life on the Lower East Side in the 70’s and 80’s, before gentrification took hold.
At 11:30 a.m., it’s “Gals From the Hood” an informal conversation and benefit jewelry sale featuring four women who grew up in the neighborhood and have been friends for 50 years. They are: Marilyn Guss Altman (Guss’ Pickles), Carol Hordin (whose father ran a Jewish deli) Carol Schneider Margolin (her father sold knishes from a pushcart) and Hesta Fortgang (who will be displaying her handmade fashion jewelry).
There will also be mini tours of the neighborhood throughout the day. If you would like more information about Sunday’s schedule, have a look at the conservancy’s web site. The Visitor Center is located at 400 Grand Street.
Hi, Ed! This sounds fun. I wonder if “Carol Schneider Margolin” is Carole Margolin, who used to run the 14th Street Y’s preschool many years ago. I also wondered if you know where the photo exhibit is — at the conservancy’s own visitor center? ? Google is not helpful. I can’t go on Sunday but I’d love to see it!
Hi Marjorie,
The exhibit will be up at the Visitor Center beyond Sunday. Not sure how long it runs but I’m sure it’s at least a few weeks. The hours are limited, though. See this link:

I think that’s old time comedian Leonard Barr.
