A huge crowd has descended on PS. 134 on East Broadway for a rally to protest Mayor Bloomberg’s decision to cut after school funding. The auditorium is filled beyond capacity. Police are keeping the overflow crowd outside.

    These cuts are devastating and show how out of touch federal, state and city officials are with the needs of children and families. They prattle on and on about how much they care about education and then destroy afterschool programs. They deprive children, remove childcare supports from parents, and eliminate urgently needed jobs, as well as weakening community-based organizations. Jon

    Everyone is tightening their belts. All programs are going to have to take hits. It’s time for people to be realistic about that instead of protesting when their favorite service takes a hit.
