The Friends of Seward Park and the Hester Street Fair are teaming up to restore the Schiff Fountain, on the western edge of the park. They’ve launched a petition drive with a goal of collecting 5,000 signatures. The fountain was donated to the people of the Lower East Side in 1894 by Jacob Schiff, a financier and philanthropist. It’s been in a state of disrepair for many years.
We’re going to have a full story on their campaign in the next week. In the meantime you can read more about the fountain on Samuel Gruber’s blog.
Here’s a link to the petition.
Hope it happens but that’s a lot of cash. Pity about the old pavilion.
