The five-story building at 51 Hester St., near the corner of Essex Street, has been sold to a new owner.
Land records dated in late December but just filed last week show that a corporation called Wan You Inc. with an address of 99 Canal St. bought the building from the Kadouri family for $2.2 million.
The building, which houses the boutique A NY Thing on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors, had been on the market since July 2010. Records show it had been in the Kadouri family name, under various corporate names, since the 1970s.
In other news along that block, the city’s buildings department has issued a “stop-work” order at the adjoining property at 53 Hester St., the former home of 93-year-old Gertel’s Bakery, which closed in June 2007 and was demolished later that year. (Read an appreciation of Gertel’s here.)
Authorities ordered all construction halted on Dec. 5, citing “withdrawal by permit holder.” Records show numerous violations and more than $30,000 in fines issued at the site, where owner J.P. Hester Inc. had planned to build an 11-story condo building with 10 apartments. The most egregious DOB complaint dates back to the demolition in November 2007, when inspectors issued a $10,000 fine for failure to comply with safety standards while deconstructing the building.
