Free Open House at the Chinatown YMCA Saturday

Must Read

If you’ve been thinking about joining the Chinatown YMCA, now might be the time. They’re waiving the standard “Joiner’s Fee” for new memberships until October 10th.

There’s also a free Open House this coming Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. You can take part in group fitness classes, including: total body conditioning (1 p.m.) and zumba (2 p.m.).  At 3 p.m. there will be free fitness assessments, body fat, BMI% and blood pressure screenings.  Membership fees at the Chinatown YMCA start at $94 a month (but no one is turned away if they can’t pay the full amount). You might also want to consider “Family Fun Day” packages (more info on the Y’s web site).

A few weeks ago, we stopped by the Chinatown YMCA, at 273 Bowery, to meet Jeannette Corey, the semi-new executive director. Among the initiatives she really wanted the community to know about is the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention program. See below for information about that:

If you are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes. Over the course of 16 weekly one-hour sessions, a trained lifestyle coach will help you learn about healthy eating, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated and other behavior changes, all in a comfortable classroom setting. Call Judy Ouziel at 212-912-2524, visit nyc.ydiabetes.com or ask the membership desk to see how to qualify and for more information.
