A Change in Ownership at Dora Coffee

Image via Dora's Facebook page.

A change is ahead at Dora, the 9-month old coffee shop on East Broadway.  Nicole Slaven let us know today she’s sold the business to Jamie Rogers, a regular customer who lives in an apartment above Dora (at 221 East Broadway).

Nicole told us a short time ago she loved creating a space that quickly became a community gathering spot with a reputation for high quality coffee and friendly customer service. When Jamie approached her a couple of months ago, Nicole  saw a rare opportunity to hand off the business to a strong manager with neighborhood roots who could make sure her vision “could continue to be a reality.”

Jamie says he wants all of Dora’s customers to know the quality coffee and service they’ve come to expect will continue. He’s looking forward to adding new items to the menu and continuing to expand the shop’s offerings.  An attorney, who’s leaving a corporate law firm to run the Lower East Side business, Jamie will be on the job full time right after Labor Day Weekend.

Nicole says she hopes to be involved in new projects that are even more coffee-centric. In June, she married Ed Kaufmann, a roaster at Stumptown Coffee and an occasional Dora barista.

CB3 Member – Critic of Bar Policies – Honored By Young Democrats

Natasha Dillon

Last night, Manhattan Young Democrats hosted its 3rd Annual “Young Gets it Done Awards.”  Among the five honorees: East Village resident and recent Community Board 3 appointee Natasha Dillon.

The blurb on MYD’s web site notes that Dillon (founding member of the advocacy organization Queer Rising), is a “tireless advocate for LGBT rights and equality” and has been arrested at protests numerous times in the past few years.

Dillon is already making her mark on the community board.

This past spring, another group Dillon helps lead (she’s vice president), the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, presented an award of its own — the First Annual “Lavender Padlock Award.” given to “expose anti-nightlife zealots who work assiduously to close our legally licensed nightlife establishments.” Continue reading CB3 Member – Critic of Bar Policies – Honored By Young Democrats

Local Cooking at Home: Okra with Red Onion, Tomato and Corn

LES resident and locavore chef Carlin Greenstein is contributing a weekly seasonal recipe based on  fresh food you can find at local markets or in your CSA. This week, she shares her recipe for okra with red onion, tomato, corn and basil oil.

This  may be my favorite time of year for the arrival of my CSA box and for visiting the farmer’s market here in New York City.  This week we received red onions, corn, tomatoes, garlic, string beans, cucumbers, peppers and plenty of dark leafy greens. With those ingredients, what could go wrong?  Not a lot!  And I added some of my husband’s fresh basil oil to the mix as well, a staple in our refrigerator during the months of August and September.   Continue reading Local Cooking at Home: Okra with Red Onion, Tomato and Corn

Cops Bust Funeral Store for Selling “Counterfeit” Paper Bags

It’s well known that people peddling fake goods in Chinatown will go to extraordinary lengths to — literally — keep making a quick buck,  But could it be that they’re actually using a funeral supply store on Mulberry Street as a front for their illegal businesses?

That’s apparently what police and U.S. Customs agents suspected Tuesday when they swooped in on the unassuming store, Fook On Sing, located at 44 Mulberry Street.  They confiscated a number of “bags” emblazoned with designer labels and other items, which according to the store owners and employees, are ceremonial offerings made of paper. The items. which also include (obviously) fake money and miniature sports cars, are traditionally burned after loved ones pass away. Calls to “Fix” Delancey Street — Is the City Listening?

May 2011; the scene of a fatal accident involving 51-year old Patricia Cuevas and a garbage truck. Photo by Adrian Fussell.

More now on the renewed calls for improved safety on Delancey Street, in the aftermath of another death along the dangerous thoroughfare last week. A short time ago, we posted the full text of a letter from State Senator Daniel Squadron and City Councilmember Margaret Chin to NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. In that letter, they urged the DOT to “take immediate action” on Delancey Street. It turns out the Lower East Side’s most influential elected official, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, has also weighed in on the topic recently.  Continue reading Calls to “Fix” Delancey Street — Is the City Listening?

Remains of Festival Mexicana Hauled Away

120 Rivington Street

Today workers are hauling away what’s left of the interior of Festival Mexicana at 120 Rivington Street. No official word what’s happening here. Back in June, David Shemesh (Antibes Bistro) went before Community Board 3′s SLA Committee, outlining plans for a restaurant serving American food (yes, a bit vague). He wanted approval to operate between the hours of 10 a.m.-4 a.m. seven days a week.  CB3 ended up voting against the proposal because Shemesh did not show at the full board meeting to sign “stipulations” mandating shorter hours.  Anyone with more intel? Please let us know!

Chin, Squadron Call on City to Address Delancey Street Safety Concerns

Delancey Street, near Chrystie -- the scene of last week's fatal accident.

City Councilmember Margaret Chin and State Senator Daniel Squadron are just out with a statement on last week’s accident on Delancey Street that killed cyclist Jeffrey Axelrod of Brooklyn:

Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Council member Margaret Chin called on the Department of Transportation to address the serious safety concerns on the Delancey Street corridor. In a letter to DOT, Senator Squadron and Council member Chin highlighted the fatal accident on Delancey and Chrystie Streets last week as the latest reminder of the need to immediately improve safety conditions on the thoroughfare. Clinton Street Checkpoint

Photo

Traffic is slow going right now on Clinton Street. Police have set up a checkpoint just north of Delancey and are randomly pulling over motorists exiting the Williamsburg Bridge.

UPDATE 12:26 p.m. We understand some complaints were received from local residents about the street being used as a truck route.  Police apparently set up the checkpoint to alleviate that problem.

Williamsburg Bridge Muggings – Incidents on the Rise?

The Brooklyn Paper reports a robber on a bicycle, brandishing a gun, stole a woman’s purse on the Williamsburg bike path this past Sunday.  It happened on the Brooklyn end of the bridge, shortly after midnight.

The suspect is reported to have said: “Give me your bag. What’s in your hand?”  The woman handed over an ipod and cell phone.  He then told her to “be quiet,” and ordered her to run towards Manhattan. He took off into Brooklyn.

There have been other recent incidents on the bridge. Last month, Brooklyn Paper reported, an NYU student was “manhandled and robbed” on July 23rd, also on the Brooklyn side of the bridge. That attack occurred in the morning, at around 9:30 a.m.

New Apartments at 138 East Broadway Hit the LES Market

138 East Broadway.

In the past several days, brokers begun showing 138 East Broadway, a new residential building just to the west of Seward Park. There are 23 units being offered, ranging in price from $565,000 (1 bedroom) to $1.5 million (3 bed, 2 bath).

The developer told World Journal (via Our Chinatown), the Chinese language newspaper, that he’s optimistic based on recent open houses.  While initially worried about putting the building up while the real estate market was tanking, he explained (paraphrasing), “many Chinese buyers have taken part in advanced sales, attracted to the excellent location and the quiet the building delivers amid the hubbub of Chinatown.”

More photos after the jump. Continue reading New Apartments at 138 East Broadway Hit the LES Market

Protest Planned at the Offices of Bialystoker Home Chairman

Community activist John Penley is getting involved in the effort to save the Bialystoker Nursing Home. Overnight, he left a link to a new Facebook events page on one of our recent stories concerning the closure of the home, located at 228 East Broadway. Penley is planning a protest Thursday afternoon at 3:30, at the Midtown offices of real estate developer Ira Mesiter, the chair of the Bialystoker board.  A rally was planned yesterday, in front of the nursing home (it was scheduled at the exact moment that the earthquake rumbled up and down the East Coast).
