Weekend Music Picks

Must Read

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Terre Roche

TERRE ROCHE – Fri, July 15 | 7PM at The Living Room

Since the mid-70s, the Roches have both collectively and individually played an essential role in the New York folk scene. A trio of sisters, Terre, Maggie, and Suzzy, the Roches are known for their super tight harmonies, playful spirit and wholly original take on song composition.

Over the years, each sister has at one time or another stepped out on her own to record solo albums, act in films or teach music. Terre, a soprano and an excellent guitarist, will be playing at the Living Room on Friday, performing songs from her projects Sound of a Tree Falling, Us an’ Them, and Afro-JerseyFREE // 154 Ludlow St.

THE RAMBLIN’ KIND Sat, July 16 | 9PM at Banjo Jim’s

The Ramblin' Kind

New York country outfit The Ramblin’ Kind really live up to their name. They ramble, they amble, they mosey and roam, all over the wide-open spaces of traditional country music. The Ramblin’ Kind might not wear 10-Gallon hats or tasseled Nudie Suits, but they certainly deliver the musical goods.

In their live sets, you’d be hard-pressed to identify the originals among the covers. They are so true to spirit and style that songs written last year sound just as good as the dusty tunes of the old cowboy crooners. FREE // 700 East 9th St.

REBECCA JORDAN – Sun, July 17 | 10:00PM at the Rockwood Music Hall

Rebecca Jordan

Cleveland native Rebecca Jordan has a very special, unassuming voice, and when paired with her sparse musical arrangements, it really shines.  Jordan self-released her debut EP, The Trouble with Fiction, and slowly began to gain some attention. Now with her latest EP, the soft, slightly jazzy Souvenir, she is beginning to hit her stride. Souvenir was nominated for an Independent Music Award and comes from her own philosophy that every song is something that one not only hears, but takes with them from then on.  FREE // 196 Allen St.

Splitting his time between performing and producing, contributor Ken Beasley primarily plays with his own roots/rock band, Ken Beasley & Co., as well as the power punk outfit, Missy Sport, while also curating the Underground at the Abrons music series on the Lower East Side
