New LES Restaurant Anticipates Tidy Profit

Crain’s weighs in today with a piece on CO-OP Food and Drink, the new nightlife spot in the Hotel on Rivington.  Profiling co-owner Alan Phillips, reporter Tina Traster writes:

The restaurant represents a crowning moment in Mr.  Philips’ career. It is operated under the Guerrilla Culinary Group, which he co-founded in September 2010 with (partner Jason) Apfelbaum, who is also the CEO of Chef & Co. a corporate catering and event firm… “Opening a restaurant in a hotel is a blessing,” said Mr. Philips, who expects to gross $10 million this year. “With a free-standing restaurant, you’re on your own.” Hotels offer built-in marketing, foot traffic, exposure to tourism and a variety of revenue streams, including the bar, room service and catering, he says.

“No Standing” Zone Approved in Front of Comprehensive Kids School

383 Grand Street.

A follow-up on a story we reported earlier this month. This week, Community Board 3 approved a request from Comprehensive Kids Development School for a “no standing” zone at 383 Grand Street.

School administrators said they were concerned about the safety of students, who must navigate parked cars to get from school buses to the facility, located in the Seward Park Cooperative.  The school serves special education students.  At Tuesday night’s meeting, parents spoke in support of the proposal. Several children, including one in a wheelchair, were also in attendance.

A community board member, Rabbi Yissachar Ginzberg, had submitted a letter saying the “no standing” zone would be an “undue hardship” for the community.  Ginzberg was not present at this week’s meeting (he’s traveling overseas) and there was no mention of his letter before the vote.

The “no standing” zone will be in effect weekdays from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in front of 383 Grand.

Weekend Music Picks

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Air Traffic Controller

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER – Fri, July 29 | 7PM at The Living Room

While most pop-rock bands are content to pick a key, strum 4 chords, and repeat a chorus 2.5 times, Air Traffic Controller compellingly thinks a little more before taking the plunge. The heart of Air Traffic Controller beats within the chest of songwriter Dave Munro, who was indeed at one time, an honest to goodness air traffic controller. The Boston native has since traded his radar for a guitar, and now travels the country playing songs made as much for the listening room as they are for the radio. FREE// 196 Allen St.

Here’s a quick recap from last night’s meeting of Community Board 3′s land use committee, which is planning for the redevelopment of the 7-acre Seward Park site (SPURA).  For the first time, there was at least an inkling from the city that they see some merit in the CB3′s planning guidelines, passed last January. We wanted to mention that our friends at the Educational Alliance recently launched a new neighborhood blog. It’s called Building Blocks and features a variety of stories about the people and programs that make up one of the Lower Side’s oldest and largest community organizations.  Quite a few neighborhood non-profits have been focusing on social media in the past couple of years. The Educational Alliance has been particularly active on twitter and Facebook. In recent months, we’ve been talking with quite a few community organizations about their plans to do expand their reach online. It’s great to see Edgies launching this new venture! Check it out.
