Tomorrow Morning: Relive the Yiddish Theater

Sixth Street Community Synagogue.

Here’s a last minute idea for your weekend. Tomorrow morning the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy is offering, “Second Hand Rose, A Journey Down the Jewish Rialto.”

Longtime LES resident and neighborhood historian Elissa Sampson will lead a fascinating tour of historic 2nd Avenue. Among the centerpieces of the three hour program –  a visit to Community Synagogue on East 6th Street, originally St. Marks Lutheran Church, spiritual home of the German congregation that lost one-thousand parishioners in the General Slocum disaster. You’ll meet Herb Latner, a senior officer of the synagogue, and hear his charming description of life as a choir boy in a Yiddish theater.

The tour will also make stops at several East Village community gardens, hotbeds of citizen activism through the decades. And you’ll see the names of many famous performers of the Yiddish theater on the Second Avenue “Starwalk.”

The tour begins on the southwest corner of 2nd Avenue and 12th Street, at 10:45 a.m. It costs $18.

Ruhalter Quitting Essex Street Market

Jeffrey's Meat, officially closing shop at the Essex Street Market - photo by thelodownny.com

A short time ago Jeffrey Ruhalter of Jeffrey’s Meats told us he’s not reopening his shop in the Essex Street Market. Three months ago Ruhalter temporarily closed the store to get his finances in order. His rent was due for an increase but Ruhalter’s landlord, the Econmic Development Corp., had been working with him on moving to a smaller space. (Ruhalter released a statement citing the EDC’s support back in March.)

Unfortunately, he was unable to come up with a way to save the butcher shop, which had been a fixture in the market since 1940.

Here’s a statement released today by the EDC:

“We wish Jeffrey the best, and thank him and the Ruhalter family for their decades of dedication to the market and its customers. We will now move forward with finding a new vendor to reactivate Jeffrey’s former space and look forward to continuing the success of this vibrant public market which serves the Lower East Side community.”

Emergency Crews Rescue Attempted “Jumper”

Emergency crews have apparently rescued a woman who was threatening to jump from a building at Essex and Canal streets. This is a photo from neighborhood resident Peter Rojas who reported the incident via his twitter feed. More to come…

UPDATED 1:10 p.m. A few more details. Rojas tweeted, “huge crowds were cheering and clapping when she was saved.”   A reader posted on our Facebook wall, ‘”The NYPD did an awesome job.” A reader texted us more details: the woman was dangling from a ledge of 1 Essex (that’s the building on the northeast corner of Essex and Canal). Police grabbed her suddenly, apparently just in time. They had laid out an inflatable landing pad on the street below. Continue reading Emergency Crews Rescue Attempted “Jumper”

NYPD, CB3 Want Delancey Street Safety Improvements

Anyone who crosses Delancey Street at Clinton on a regular basis knows it’s one of the most treacherous intersections in the neighborhood.   Several factors combine to heighten the danger, including: an absurdly short “walk” signal, a heavy volume of cars and trucks racing on and off the bridge and a growing number of bikes accessing the bridge ramp.

In the months ahead, there are going to be a few changes here. It remains to be seen what impact they’ll have on pedestrian safety. Continue reading NYPD, CB3 Want Delancey Street Safety Improvements

Weekend Music Picks

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Laura Stevenson & the Cans

LAURA STEVENSON AND THE CANS – Fri, June 24 І 8PM at The Bowery Ballroom

Laura Stevenson, of Laura Stevenson and the Cans, comes with quite a pedigree. Her grandmother was a singer with Benny Goodman’s band, and her grandfather penned the classic “The Little Drummer Boy”. It’s undeniable, however, that Stevenson is completely “of” her generation. She crafts exquisitely melodic songs that gently float about, yet ultimately satisfy with a cracking thunder, whether by sound or by lyric. $15// 6 Delancey St.

Rent Regulations: Affordable Housing Advocates Respond

As lawmakers in Albany wrangle over the final details of new legislation to replace the rent regulations that expired June 15, politicians and community leaders are weighing in on the pros and cons.

Yesterday, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver called the agreement “a huge relief for tenants.”

“Working with Gov. Cuomo, we have saved the rent laws and expanded their protections for the first time in nearly two decades,” Silver said in prepared statement. “This is an important victory in our ongoing effort to support working families and ease the affordable housing crisis.”

We also asked local affordable housing advocates for their take on the situation, and compiled their responses.
