A Sunday Picnic at the Hester Street Fair

Must Read

This weekend our friends at the Hester Street Fair are planning their first Sunday special event. HSF organizer SuChin Pak has all of the details:

We launched the season, hoping to shake things up by only having the market on Saturdays with Sundays reserved for extra special FOOD events.  Here’s our first one of the season!  This Sunday, June 12, Hester Street Fair will be hosting the very first “Sunday Picnic” with over 20 food vendors especially invited for their picnic menus.  The space will be transformed to what we hope will be the largest communal picnic spot in the city on Sunday–25 communal picnic tables for lots of extra sitting, sunning and eating.  Bring friends, family, neighbors and take a table!  Unlike a lot of frenzied food festivals, we are encouraging folks to come, sit and RELAX with great food…it’s a picnic!
PLUS ping pong, LIVE New Orleans jazz from The Red Hook Ramblers and lawn badminton!  To share the good times, photos taken at the event and posted on to our FB page will be judged and the winner will receive a free Windows 7 Smart phone with a month of free service!!  In short, it will be a summer celebration with food, games and friends!

Some highlights include our star vendor, from the creators of Freeman’s Alley and Peels, head pastry chef Shuna Lydon will be manning a special Peels Dessert Booth for their big Hester debut.  Before Peel’s Lydon worked in such notable kitchens as Gramercy Tavern, Citizen Cake, Bouchon, the French Laundry and the Modern Pantry in London.

Delicious teats include:

  • Mini Peels S’More Cake + Shuna’s famous Graham Cracker for $4. The Peels S’More Cake is a Devil’s Food cake frosted with Valrhona milk chocolate ganache and topped with homemade vanilla marshmallow swirl which they’ll blowtorch for visual and delectable effect. Each cake will come with a Peels famous graham cracker.
  • Clerkenwell has become a foodie destination in the Lower East Side with the addition of Head Chef Ryan L. Jordan.  Jordan comes from the kitchen at The Breslin and The John Dory. An alum of Chef April Bloomfield and CIA, enjoys seasonal and market driven dishes.  Hester’s Sunday picnic will welcome their big debut to the market. They’ll be serving Currywurst in a New York pretzel roll (Bratwurst banger & spicey curry sauce).
  • We have 2 booths teaming to make one iconic dessert.  Adirondack Creamery will be pairing up with famed Brooklyn Farmacy to create ice cream floats and egg creams at the picnic. Adirondack Creamery Menu:  New flavors Carrot Spice and Coconut only available at Hester plus Kulfi Pstiacho Cardamom, Whiteface Mint Chip, Vanilla, Black Raspberry, Strawberry Moon, Barkeater, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and Coffee Bean. (Adirondack Creamery ice cream is made with hormone free milk and cream from the eight small family farms of Hudson Valley Fresh using an old fashioned family recipe.) Brooklyn Farmacy Menu:   Root Beer floats, Cola floats, Strawberry floats & Egg Creams.  (Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain is an old soda fountain located in a well-preserved pharmacy from the 1920s in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.)
  • Purple Yam, homemade Filipino fare, will be making a special appearance.  Purple Yam was opened in Ditmas Park November 10, 2009 by husband-wife owners Chef Romy Dorotan and Amy Besa. On the menu: Pork spareribs adobo and the Noritaco
  • The Pofferjtes Man debuted last weekend at the Hester Street Fair and were sold out by 3pm.  Pronounced ‘poh-fur-chis’, poffertjes are mini Dutch pancakes around 1.5 inches wide and made in specially imported pans. They are crispy on the outside and light and moist on the inside and completely irresistible. Served traditionally with fresh butter and a generous dusting of powdered sugar ‘the poffertjes man’ takes this sweat treat to a whole new level with lashings of hand whipped cream and market fresh strawberries. Treat yourself to a serve of fresh poffertjes made fresh right in front of your eyes. On the menu: Traditional Poffertjes – $5. Add Strawberries and Cream $2
  • We hope folks will bring their own picnic baskets to fill.  We have a ton of homemade foods that picnic attendees can bring home.  What summer picnic would be complete without The Jam Stand–homemade jams, jellies and spreads. On the menu: JAMWICHES for $4.  Served on your choice of Oatmeal Bread, White Bread, and Cheddar Scones. Paired with a choice of any jam & PB. (Perfect for the kids!) 4oz jars range from $5-6 and 8oz jars from $8-10 with the exception of Bacon which is $10 for a 4 oz jar.
